Taryn Hicks: Semi-Regular Thoughts…

September 20, 2009

I’m cancelling my phone book delivery.

Every year a phone book arrives on my doorstep, and every year I throw it out. I don’t need it since the White Pages and the Yellow Pages have been available on the Internet. So every year I recycle it or throw it out or shred it in a fit of annoyance.

We asked the delivery man if he could skip delivering the phone book to us, but he refused. Turns out they get paid by each book they deliver, so they refuse to not deliver your phone book, even if you don’t want one.

What you need to do is phone Telstra to have your Phone Book canceled. It appears that Telstra/Sensis don’t have an online form or any other way of cancelling, so you have to phone them. The number to cancel is: 1800 810 211

What I’d like to know is when do we get to the point where we opt in to receiving the phone book instead of opting out? For all the phone books that are never used, I hate to think how much paper and money is being wasted.

Now all I need to do is find somewhere to recycle this useless thing.

Thank you to @mynameisbrett for tearing the Yellow Pages for me.

  • For the last three years I have been updating the only thing that keeps our couch off of the floor - the Adelaide Yellow Pages. I find it quite satisfying to get the husband to lift the couch up, and me swap over from the previous to the new version of the big, lump of yellow uselessness. It's almost like getting a new couch.
Almost as satisfying is taking the old version to the back hard and setting fire to it. Actually, that's not satisfying that's just FUN.

Getting Brett to tear the Yellow Pages was definitely fun. I think if I burned it in our tiny back yard, the neighbours would call the police and the fire brigade.
